BirchBox June 2016 & Why I’m Cancelling My Subscription

My June 2016 BirchBox is my 8th BirchBox. Inside are some really great products! Here is my box this month:

L to R: Real Chemistry 3 Minute Body Peel, Benefit Gimme Brow in Light, Ardency Inn Modster Eyeliner in Black, Supergoop Defense & Refresh Setting Mist, Laura Geller Highlighter in Gilded Honey
Swatches of the Ardency Inn liner and the Laura Geller highlighter.

This is probably one of my best boxes. I love Benefit Gimme Brow, so I basically have a backup of it for when I run out of my current full sized one. Laura Geller Gilded Honey has pretty much reached cult following status, so I’ve been curious to try it for a while now, and it’s pretty gorgeous. The Ardency Inn liner seems like a better version of the Urban Decay Pencil Liners – longer staying power and no smudging. I love that the Supergoop spray has SPF in it – this is a perfect touch up spray for the summer time! The only thing I haven’t tried yet is the body peel.

So, why am I cancelling my BirchBox?

Well, 2 reasons:

  1.  I just got a Sephora Play Box and I’m thinking that I don’t really need two subscription boxes. Sephora has more brands that I like and is more makeup-focused.
  2. Birchbox is re-vamping their points system. After July, reviews will not give points. The only way to earn points will be through referrals and by purchasing items in the store. I was able to get $5 in points for each box that I bought because of their old rewards system. With the new one eliminating the points for reviews, this effectively doubles the cost of the box.

So that’s it, really. I was thinking of keeping BirchBox around even with a Sephora Play subscription because I basically got back $5 for each $10 box, but now that it’s just straight $10 per box, that sort of put the nail in the coffin.

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy BirchBox. I really liked the quality of the boxes and I discovered a few cool hair products. But for me, the changing of the points system and my preference for the Sephora Play box makes it not worth it to me. So I cashed out my remaining points (got a beauty blender pro!) and cancelled.

That’s all! Feel free to share your experience with BirchBox or your feelings towards the new points system below.

❤ Jen

  1. You really got a nice box. My june box was womp womp and helped me canceled. I am like you , i joined the sephora play subscription. The neat part is you dont have to review or do anything, they give 50 extra points and you can use it on purchase
