Hello all! It’s been a while since I did a real review on here. A couple weeks ago, Ulta was having a buy 2, get 1 free sale on NYX. I had been hearing about and wanted to try their lip lingerie liquid lipsticks. I got 2 shades: Lace Detail and Embellishment. Sadly I was pretty disappointed in this formula and I don’t plan on buying more. Here are my thoughts:
I think the packaging is actually really adorable. It is a clear tube with a black cap and cursive handwriting that fits with the lingerie theme. The wand on these is not a typical doe foot – it’s flat and longer than most. The applicator is nice and soft.
Here is the ingredients list for both of the colors I have. The top is the shade Embellishment, a grayish mauve, and the bottom is lace detail, a pale pink nude. NYX is, I believe, a cruelty free brand but interestingly the cruelty free logo is not on these lip lingeries. So I’m not sure what’s going on there.
The shades in this line are very nice. They are all wearable and there are a lot of nudes for all skin types. Some of the shades will be too light for darker skin tones but the others will look beautiful. There are also a few pale nudes for those with fair skin. (take note of the patchiness in these swatches)
Now, this is where things go south for me. In my experience, liquid lipsticks are supposed to be opaque in one swipe, and two coats should not be necessary. I find these lip lingeries to be quite patchy. In the swatch above, I have swatched both of these along with my favorite formula, Dose of Colors. You can see an obvious difference. The patchiness of lace detail is not as visible as the patchiness on embellishment, but they are both very sub par to the dose of colors swatch.
Here are some photos of me wearing both lip lingeries, as well as dose of colors stone:
So on my lips you can see how these like to sink into my lip lines and create the infamous “butthole lips,” especially with lace detail. They look like I’ve been wearing them for hours, but this is freshly applied. The dose of colors one looks dry, yes, because I have dry lips all the time, but it doesn’t separate and pucker my lips as badly as the NYX formula.
The day I got these, I tried on lace detail, smiled, and the separation in my lines was twice as bad as the photo above and I just said “goddammit that’s disgusting.” I had literal stripes on my lips because the product was separating in my lines! I tried to fix this by applying another layer but then my lips looked even more dry and the lipstick looked very thick and gross. I finally got it to look presentable by applying my MAC lip primer underneath. Embellishment actually looks better on the lips than swatched. It’s a pretty cool color too.
I do have to give credit and say that these are more comfortable on the lips than the ColourPop and Kylie formulas (but those are longer lasting!). The finish is a bit tacky, so you have to avoid pressing your lips together. As far as liquid lipsticks go, I would rate these at a medium comfort level.
On their own, these lipsticks will last several hours, but if you start drinking or eating, they fade away pretty easily and they don’t fade nicely. I’m okay with this in a liquid lipstick IF it is super comfortable (like Stila), but the NYX formula does not feel comfortable and doesn’t look comfortable either.
I don’t like these. I AM able to make them more wearable with my MAC lip primer, but as a standalone product these are just not good. Even at the low price I cannot recommend these lip lingeries because they are just a very low quality. If you are a teenager or have very full lips with no lines, these may work for you. But I think everyone else will have an experience more similar to mine. If you want a cheap liquid lipstick, I really do prefer ColourPop over these because although they are much more drying, they are actually pigmented and will last through eating and drinking. I really recommend splurging for a Stila or Dose of Colors liquid lipstick if you are looking for a really nice formula. I have those reviews on this blog too: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks: First Impressions and Dose of Colors Matte Lipstick Review.
Have any of you tried this formula? What did you think? Let me know!
